The female nude is hardly rare in the western canon of art, but with Atlas I wanted to do something a little different.
The figure is anonymous, close to the viewer, and larger that life size, almost confronting.
The body seems relaxed and at ease in the water.
The patterns of light arcing on the skin, as well as the colour palette of the piece with it's dark blues and golds, as well as the strong contrast of light and dark, have something of stars and the night sky about them, like constellations.
I titled the piece 'Atlas' partly because I felt that the light across the skin was like a map, but also as a reference to the greek mythological character; the titan who carries the world (or sky) on his back.
I liked the idea that with this painting, we are looking at something beautiful, but also strong and powerful.
