Hi! My name is Constance, I am 31 years old and I have a long-standing fascination with water. I have always loved art, but I also knew that I would need to financially support myself when I left home. That, and being the first person in my family to attend university, meant I chose to study a more ‘academic’ degree.

Fast forward three years, and I had graduated from university and was working an administrative job in London. I was missing art badly, drawing and painting in my spare time. I eventually made a huge decision to switch to holding a part-time job so that I could put myself through art school.

I did that for almost two years, and I’ll be honest — it was incredibly difficult! For better or worse, our society values money, and needing to be so financially careful for a long time can start to grind you down, especially when you are still building your skills and the future feels uncertain.

In 2020, I started to produce some work that I was getting a little proud of. I decided to enter it into some art competitions, but I made a deal with myself: if nothing came from them, I would need to seriously consider stopping altogether.

I was incredibly fortunate — I was selected to exhibit at all six of the competitions I had entered. I was also named the Overall Winner as well as the winner of the Young Artist Prize at the Bath Society of Arts.

Off the back of this, I was approached by two galleries, and I slowly began to think of myself as a professional artist. I had some sales and was getting more commission enquiries, so in April of 2021, I decided to
take a year and commit to art full-time. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing since then, but I am really enjoying this journey and where it has taken me so far – stay tuned!
